Learning in Year 1

Welcome back! It is so lovely to have so many smiley faces in Year 1. Everyone is so eager to learn that we are sure this will be a fantastic year! Let’s get started!  

English (reading and writing)                                      

 Year 1 will be learning to:

  • Apply phonic knowledge for reading and writing
  • Write simple sentences
  • Read with understanding
  • Read and learn about Harry the Happy Mouse
  • Read aloud a variety of poems to partners and groups
  • Read a variety of fiction texts
  • Describe a character and setting

Maths                                                                

Year 1 will be learning to:

  • Form numbers correctly
  • Solve problems and practical problems involving number and place value.
  • Solve one-step problems involving adding and subtracting
  • Counting in 1, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
  • Finding out 1 more and 1 less than a number
  • Recognise and create repeating patterns with numbers, objects and shapes.

Science- Humans - Year 1 will be learning to:

  • Identify and name human body parts
  • How to stay healthy
  • Name and investigate our 5 senses

History- The Royal Family - Year 1 will be learning to:                                                               

  • Recognise the difference between the past and present in their own and other people’s lives.
  • Place events in order showing the passing of time.
  • Ask and answer questions about the past through observing and handling a range of sources
  • Identifying some similarities and differences between their own present and aspects of the past.

ICT- Year 1 will be learning to:                      

  • Use a keyboard correctly
  • Technology around us
  • How we use technology
  • Use a mouse correctly
  • Develop keyboard skills
