Welcome back to the final term in Year 5.

Our genre this term is Sci-fi. We will be reading the book 'Space Oddity' by the author Christopher Edge. The children will focus on the features of a science fiction story, before familiarising themselves with the author's vocabulary. The children will complete a variety of short writing tasks to analyse the characters and events in the book. They will then write an ending to the story.
Our non-fiction writing will be based on our Science unit 'Earth and Space'. The children will write an information booklet about Earth and Space.
Division and multiplication are the maths focus for the first 2 weeks of the term. The children will then move onto a variety of lessons involving fractions. Following on from fractions, the children will link their learning to percentages. Finally, we will end the term, studying statistics and measurement.

Earth and Space is the topic this term. The children will begin by looking at various past theories about the Earth. They will also learn about the Earth's rotation and orbit and how this creates night/ day and seasons. We will complete some practical science outside, looking at the 'apparent' movement of the sun. This will then show the children how time can be calculated using shadows made by the sun.

This term, Year 5 are studying Ancient Greeks. They will consider the location in the world and also where this time period fits into history. The children will find out about the Greek gods, philosophers and the legacies that the Ancient Greeks left behind.

Our learning In Dt this term is 'food', primarily salads. We will be identifying the ingredients of different salads and tasting to see which ones we prefer. We will study the healthy eating guide to find out about the different food groups and how we should use this to stay healthy. The children will practice the various cutting/ chopping techniques, before designing and creating their own salad.
