 Year 3 marks the beginning of Key Stage 2 and an exciting new chapter in each child’s learning journey. As pupils move into this stage, they begin to take greater responsibility for their learning and develop increased independence, both academically and socially.

English

 A Bear Called Paddington

 

This half term, we will be exploring the much-loved stories of Paddington Bear. The children will learn about Paddington's adventures, his journey from Peru to London, and the characters they meet throughout the stories. They will use their knowledge to write an informative fact file about Paddington Bear and create their own Paddington-inspired story.

Through this unit, pupils will develop their reading and writing skills while exploring narrative writing and character description.

In their writing, the children will:

• Secure the use of full stops, capital letters, question marks and exclamation marks.
• Orally rehearse sentences before writing.
• Use conjunctions such as when, before, after, while and until to create complex sentences.
• Use commas to separate clauses when the subordinate clause comes first.
• Write narratives using the past tense.
• Develop character and setting descriptions using expanded noun phrases, e.g. the friendly bear with a bright red hat.
• Generate and select ambitious vocabulary from word banks.
• Use inverted commas accurately to punctuate direct speech.
• Improvise, create and write dialogue between characters.
• Plan and discuss ideas before writing using story maps, vocabulary collection and other planning formats.
• Read and analyse Paddington stories to help plan and write their own versions.
• Create and develop plots based on familiar story structures.
• Proofread and edit their work to improve spelling, grammar and punctuation.

This unit will encourage children to write creatively, develop their understanding of story structure, and build confidence in using a range of sentence types and writing techniques.

                                                                                                         

                                              

 

Maths

Throughout the year, in maths, we will be following the Red Rose Year 3 Mastery. This half-term, we will be looking at place value, addition and subtraction, length and perimeter and statistics.

Foundation Subjects

PE this half term will be on a Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  The children can come to school on these days in their school PE kits.  However, when the weather is colder the children can come in dark coloured tracksuit/joggers.

In RE, we will be looking at Christianity.  

In History we will be looking at The Stone Age.

 .

Other Useful Information.

Homework will be given out every Friday, to be handed in on the following Thursday.  Children know the expectations are to try and read three times a week (I've said I don't expect them to finish a book but at least 15 minutes each read). If they complete their homework and read, they will be rewarded with Class Dojos and go in the weekly draw for a prize.
