Summer 2

Our last half term in Year 1. How sad! We are ready to begin our final term of exciting work.  Let’s get started!   

Literacy (reading and writing)

 Year One will be learning to:

  • Read books which match their phonic knowledge.
  • Read words which contain common suffixes.
  • Listen to stories by the same author.
  • Retell stories by the same author
  • Create our own stories.

Maths

Year One will be learning to:

  • Recognise and create repeating patterns, with numbers, objects and shapes.
  • Identifying odd and even numbers linked to counting in two’s.
  • Sort numbers, objects and shapes to given criteria.
  • Solve problems involving multiplication and division.
  • Begin to read an analogue clock to the hour and half past the hour.  

Further curriculum subjects & Topic

Science- Year One will be learning to:

  • Continue learning about plants
  • Undertaking many Science investigations, testing which environment are best for plants to grow
  • We will be watching sunflowers grow!

History The Great Fire of London- Year One will be learning to:

  • Recognise the difference between the past and present in their own and other people’s lives.
  • Show their understanding of the past
  • Place events in order showing the chronology.
  • Identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods.
  • Use sources of information

ICT- Year One will be learning:

  • Internet safety - they need to follow certain rules to remain safe.
  • Use email to communicate with real people within their schools, families, and communities.
  • Understand that many websites ask for information that is private and discuss how to responsibly handle such requests.

Class reminders

  • We change reading books daily- if you read with your child, please remember to sign their reading diary. Books will not be changed if diaries aren’t signed.  
  • P.E. is on Mondays and Thursdays- children need P.E. kits in on these days.
  • Spelling test every Monday morning.

Welcome back after the Easter break. We are ready to begin our new term of exciting work.  Let’s get started!   

Literacy (reading and writing)

 Year One will be learning to:

  • Apply phonic knowledge for reading
  • Read with understanding
  • Read aloud a variety of non-fiction texts
  • Write lists
  • Write a set of instructions
  • Write an information text.

Maths

Year One will be learning to:

  • Counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
  • Continue adding and subtracting numbers.
  • Solve problems involving multiplication and division.
  • Begin to read an analogue clock to the hour and half past the hour.
  • To measure capacity using non-standardise and standardise units.
  • To recognise different denominations of coins and notes.
  • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Science- Year One will be learning to:

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
  • Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

  • Name and locate the countries in the UK.
  • Use a range of maps and globes (including picture maps) at different scales.
  • Identify capital cities within the UK.

Literacy (reading and writing)

 Year One will be learning to:

  • Apply phonic knowledge for reading
  • Read with understanding
  • Read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Write in different forms such as stories and information texts.
  • Use joining words in sentences to add more information.

Maths

Year One will be learning to:

  • Counting in 1, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
  • Continue adding and subtracting numbers.
  • Solve one step problems involving addition and subtraction.
  • Begin to read an analogue clock to the hour and half past the hour.
  • To solve simple multiplication and division problems. .

Further curriculum subjects

Science- Year One will be learning to:

  • distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made
  • identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock
  • describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials
  • compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.

History The Titanic - Year One will be learning to:

  • Recognise the difference between past and present.
  • Identify similarities and differences between past and present.
  • Place a few events in order to show the passing of time.
  • Ask questions about the past.

ICT- Year One will be learning to:

  • To create simple coding for moving objects

  • Apply phonic knowledge for reading
  • Read a variety of texts with understanding
  • Identify and discuss characters and settings of a variety of texts.
  • Write speech for characters
  • Talk about characters thoughts and feelings
  • Adapt parts of stories to write our own.

Maths

Year One will be learning to:

  • Recognise and create repeating patterns with objects, shapes and numbers
  • Identify, name and describe common 2D and 3D shapes.
  • Measure capacity in non-standard units
  • Find a half and a quarter of shapes and objects
  • Represent an amount using coins.
  • Tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.

Science Animals- Year One will be learning to:

  • Identify and name a variety of common animals
  • Describe and compare the structure of animals
  • Grouping and sorting animals
  • Recognising that animals need to be treated with care and sensitivity.

Topic Our Local Area- Year One will be learning to:

  • Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds
  • Identify the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.
  • Use a range of maps and globes (including picture maps) at different scales.
  • Recognise simple features on maps e.g. buildings, roads and fields.
  • Recognise landmarks and basic human features on aerial photos.
  • Use maps and other images to talk about everyday life e.g. where we live, journey to school etc.

  • We change reading books daily- if you read with your child, please remember to sign their reading diary. Books will not be changed if diaries aren’t signed.  
  • P.E. is on Monday and Thursday- children must come to school wearing their PE kits.
  • Homework is given out on Fridays. Children must complete their homework and return it by Thursday the following week.

  • Write simple sentences
  • Read with understanding
  • Read aloud a variety of poems to partners and groups
  • Retell familiar stories
  • Read a variety of fiction texts
  • Describe a character and setting

Maths

Year 1 will be learning to:

  • Form numbers correctly
  • Solve problems and practical problems involving number and place value.
  • Solve one-step problems involving adding and subtracting
  • Counting in 1, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
  • Finding out 1 more and 1 less than a number
  • Recognise and create repeating patterns with numbers, objects and shapes.

  • How to stay healthy
  • Name and investigate our 5 senses

History- Year 1 will be learning to:
